Hotel Information for Travelers

We have all had bad experiences travelling; staying in hotels and motels does not always meet our expectations. Whether you are on vacation or travelling for business, the goal is to find the cleanest room at the nicest area in the best hotel. It isn't always easy to do this, we get fooled by good signage, good advertising or we hear from someone that this place is the best they ever stayed in, only to find it doesn't suit us at all, maybe too dirty or less than acceptable. I have a sister in law that won't stay in any room that has used any type of room freshener or deodorizer.

Some advice to help you in your travels would be first to make a reservation. I have a friend whose husband refuses to make a reservation when they travel. He likes to just drive until they get tired and then try to find someplace to stay. This would not suit me at all; I like to know where I'm going to lay my head when I get tired. Making a reservation is for someone like me, reassuring, for others it is insurance. Supposed there is a soccer tournament in town or a big basket ball game and every single hotel and motel is booked solid. If you have a reservation, you still get your room. It may be noisy with all those fans around, but you have a room.

Most hotels and motels will want a credit card to reserve a room, not all, but most. Just remember that if you reserve a room with your credit card and then don't check in on time, your credit card will be charged. Make sure if you don't think you are going to make it, or even if you are arriving after check in time, call them. Cancel if you can't make it, but if you are going to be late checking in, they won't give your room away. If you use your credit card to reserve a room, get a confirmation number, the price of the room and last but not least, get the person's name you spoke to, this way if there is any problem checking in, you have some facts to back you up.

Say you travel with your pet; there are many hotels and motels that do allow you to bring your pet for a small increase in your room charge. Make sure when making your reservation to ask if pets are allowed.

A lot of hotels and motels offer free breakfast as part of your room charge, others may have restaurants inside the hotel and do not offer free food. Always ask if breakfast is included, don't just assume it is, being offered the check following your breakfast is not a pleasant surprise, and no one likes unplanned charges.

Travelling outside the United States is relatively easy, but when you are going to Europe or Asia or one of the islands somewhere, the rules change. Electricity and plumbing are different and in some countries, you don't even have your own bathroom, you share with the other rooms on the floor. This is an unpleasant surprise, don't you agree?Sometimes you do absolutely everything right and it still goes wrong. It seems that trying to do it right is the best way, regardless.
